The Filling Process

 Have you ever wondered how Sober Carpenter beers were made? How it goes down behind the brewery’s wall? We are offering you a behind the scenes access to the production of our non-alcoholic beers. You will have the opportunity to visit our brewery, learn about the fermentation process of our beers and meet the master brewers behind your favorite beers. In this week’s episode, lets dive into the important step of filling and seaming.

Our non-alcoholic beer is packaged in a way that helps prevent further fermentation, which could lead to the production of alcohol. At Sober Carpenter, we pasteurize the beer after it has been brewed. This involves heating it to a high temperature to remove any remaining yeast and bacteria that could cause fermentation. Over time, this unwanted fermentation could create alcohol or affect the taste. After the beer is heated, it is quickly cooled to stop the heating process and prevent the beer from overcooking or damage. Once the beer has been pasteurized and cooled, it is ready to be poured and sealed in aluminum cans.
Filling the can: The empty aluminum can is placed on a filling machine, which injects the non-alcoholic beer into the can. The machine measures the precise amount of liquid needed and fills the can to the desired level.
Seaming the lid: Once the can is filled, a lid is placed on top. The machine then uses a crimp head to ‘'crimp’' the lid onto the can, creating a tight seal and thus making it perfectly waterproof, preventing any exchange with the outside, This is also one of the reasons why the can is chosen over bottles, where the sealing of the capsule is not so precisely ensured.. This also ensures that the beer remains fresh and sparkling.
Quality control: After the can is filled and sealed, it goes through a series of quality control checks to ensure that it meets Sober Carpenter’s standards. Control of carbonation level, measurement of alcohol, and control of the overall quality of beer.
Packaging: Once the beer passes quality control, it is packaged and shipped.
At Sober Carpenter, we chose to package our beers in aluminum cans for many reasons:
  • Light protection: Aluminum cans offer excellent protection from light. Light can alter the taste of beer over time. Unlike clear or green glass bottles, which allow light to pass through, aluminum cans block out nearly all light. 
  • Environmental impact: Aluminum cans are highly recyclable and can be melted down and reused indefinitely. They also take up less space than glass bottles, which reduces transportation costs and carbon emissions.
  • Durability: Aluminum cans are extremely durable and resistant to damage. They don't break like glass bottles, and they're less likely to puncture or tear than plastic bottles.
  • Convenience: Aluminum cans are lightweight and easy to transport, making them a popular choice for outdoor events, picnics, and other occasions where glass bottles might be inconvenient or prohibited.
